Halting Money Laundering, Terrorism and Illicit Financing

In a bid to address the challenges of money laundering and terrorism financing, the office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami, SAN facilitated the move by Federal Government of Nigeria has indicated willingness to join membership of the global Financial Action Task Force (FATF) on money laundering and terrorist financing watchdog.

Improved Anti-Corruption Legislation

With the support from the Presidency and National Assembly, we have been able to enact the following anti-corruption and criminal justice laws: 1. Money Laundering Prevention and Prohibition Act, 2017. 2. Terrorism Prevention/Prohibition Act 2017. 3. Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit Act, 2018. 4. Public Interest Disclosure and Witness Protection Act 2017. 5. The Mutual Legal Assistance Act 2018. 6. Company and Allied Matters Act incorporating the Beneficial Ownership Register, 2020.

During Malami's tenure as the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, the Asset Recovery and Maagement Unit of the office revealed that fifty-nine billion, one hundred and sixty-three million, twenty-nine thousand, nine hundred and forty-nine naira, forty-six Kobo (N59,163,092.949.46) as well as three hundred and eighty-five million, four hundred and ninety-five thousand, nine, nine hundred dollars ($385,495,900.00) were locally recovered to the Nigeria government.

Eco-System Steering Commitee to bring about a new Data Management Act for Nigeria. The draft bill is at advanced stages of finalization. Proposed Laws under this category included the Electronic Evidence Act, Digital Data Management Act, Electronic Banking Act, among others.

Move for Eradication of Sex & Gender based violence

The Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice saw to the inauguaration of an Inter-Ministerial Gender Based Violence Management Committee. The Office is supervising the review of all the existing laws, providing a comprehensive and appropriate support services to ensure that victims and survisors of sexual offences are not subjected to further stigmatization and trauma, among others.

Ending poverty and ensuring food security

Malami's goal of contributing to reducing poverty is done by providing income to households through its rice anchor borrower programme and the Casava programme. At least 1702 farmers benefited in the rice project and at least 2901 benefited from two cassava projects with all beneficiaries using the proceeds to provide sustenance, school fees and other needs of their families and thereby contributing to the reduction of poverty.

It is in this spirit of giving back to society that he established two charitable foundations for good causes and the advancement of society. The charitable entities called: the Kadi Malami and Khadimiyya Foundations are active voluntary charities operating in the North West.
